My Picks - Top 10 Bakery Start-ups In Mumbai

It's no secret that I have a serious sweet tooth - you might even call me a dessert addict. But one thing that's never really made eating cake fun, is when it comes out of those large franchise stores.

In fact, I'm not a fan of eating at any franchise store. The whole experience is the same - commercial and standardized.

However, when it comes to bakeries, Mumbaikars are spoilt for choice. Presenting a list of my top 10 Bakeries in Mumbai that I feel are a must try. From scrumptious cakes, and pastries to printed cupcakes, these are goodies that are just begging to be eaten!

Theobroma (Powai) – If you’re a fan of brownies, this is the place to head to… no, run to! This quaint spot has an air of vintage charm around it. It’s always abuzz with dessert lovers, agonizing over which of the many options to choose from. No matter what you pick, you can’t go wrong – be it the “oh-so- creamy” cheesecake, the melt in your mouth mousses or fruity meringues. Theobroma
translates to “Food of the Gods,” and indeed, they live up to their name.

La Folie Patisserie (Fort Area) – You’ll never feel more like “a kid in a candy store” than you will on entering La Folie Patisserie. The glass counter perpetually gleams with the assortment of items. The tremendous selection of macaroons ranges from mint to Japanese lemon and even Paan (if that’s your thing). Try out their Infinite Caramel Cake and hot chocolate – you will agree it’s a heavenly indulgence!
Needless to say, it’s a little on the steep side (budget wise) and getting a seat here is a challenge. A must-visit for Vegetarians!

Sweet Moments (Santa Cruz) –  This is one place where you can customize the cake of your dreams and have it delivered to your doorstep. The soft centered chocolates are a must try - especially the mocha mousse and orange. My absolute favourites are the Royal Opera and Zebra Torte *drool.*
The cake pops and cookies are fantastic! Easy on the pocket and an overall treat for dessert lovers, especially Vegetarians.

Cake Pop Rush – The best goodies come out of home bakeries. Cake Pop Rush is the perfect example. Yummy, sweet, soft and fun – you’ll find yourself craving one of them every time you need a sugar rush. The service is prompt and the rates are reasonable too. What more could we ask for?

Dark Temptation (Marine Lines) – Muffins!! You’ll be surprised
at how fast they disappear from your table when you order them from this charming outlet at Marine Lines. The cakes are beautifully designed and super indulgent. Overall, this place is easy on the wallet and delivers value for money.

Baker’s Treat (Navi Mumbai Vashi & Nerul) – This bakery never disappoints. The cakes are light,
fresh and moist and the presentation, impressive! Renowned for their addictive Fererro Rocher Cake,
you’ll be walking out saying that it’s the “best you ever had”

Indulge Custom Cake and Chocolates – Indulge is quickly getting famous in the Mulund- Thane area and not without good reason. The Red Velvet Cake, Chocobomb and Mixed Fruit cakes are the talk of the town. What gives it that extra charm is that it’s a home bakery and the owner adds in her personal touch with ideas, customization and alternatives. Located in an old factory area, this place is slightly difficult to find but completely worth it – like a diamond in a coal mine!

Jar Designs (Vile Parle) – Cakes in a jars of gooey goodness – that’s what Jar Designs is all about.
The sinfully creamy Red Velvet Cheesecake Jar will have you speechless! This home bakery is a great option for vegetarians. Having sound rates, the desserts make for great gifting options too! You will remember the vivid colours and out-of-the-world taste days after you’ve had the last bite.

Crimson Cakes - A home bakery that’s as delightful as the cakes are. Extremely high standards are maintained even with the most tedious 3D designs. The cakes are customized to perfection. You’re sure to love these delectable yet beautiful creations.

Sonali’s Cupcakes (Bandra W) - It’s not often that you get cakes for diet conscious people. Sonali’s Cupcakes are an exception. These cakes are moist, rich and bursting with goodness. Yet another thing that sets them apart is the ability to create beautiful prints on the cupcakes. One must try the Nutella Option. Targeted at the premium segment, this place will have you going back again and again…

There ya have it!! Next time you have a reason to celebrate, give these bakeries a try, and let me know what you think.

If you have an undiscovered bakery that you think should feature in this list, let me know. I'll be glad to check it out. More food, yaaaay!

  4. 1. As an (almost) everyday abuser of Theobroma since the past couple of years, I have a slightly different opinion. The hype of the brownies casts a shadow on their other less talked about products. Their mutton puff is the best I have had in my life yet. So also their danishes. Equally delicious, albeit, a tad bit pricey is their breakfast menu- especially their sandwiches. But of course this post is about the desserts. I'm just pouring out my dissent about Theo's best culinary creation.

    2. Ice-cream: The neglected dessert. Just like "men" are the neglected sex these days (everybody talks about feminism and being a feminist and it sometimes gets a little too much - let's not go there.) ice-creams are the neglected dessert. Nobody talks about just ice creams anymore.. Isn't there enough to talk about? I think there is. Are people talking about it as much as they should? Evidently not. The best ice cream you get in Bombay is Indigo Deli's (chocolate truffle my personal favorite) followed by Parfait ice cream company. What's yours?
